The problem / task

Working in pairs, we improved an existing (and partially incomplete) back-end voting application with a focus on maintainability, security, and operational quality. The goal was to improve code quality, resolve security vulnerabilities, and optimize operational aspects of the application in accordance with the ISO 25010 software quality model.

The challenges / what I learned

The biggest challenge was working within a partially incomplete codebase, making it difficult to fully understand and improve existing functionality. It was a valuable experience in working with legacy code, identifying improvement opportunities, and implementing solutions that enhanced maintainability, security, and operational quality.

The result

The final result was an improved back-end application that met the required standards for maintainability, security, and operations. The codebase was cleaned up, security vulnerabilities were resolved, and the operational aspects of the application were significantly improved. As an additional task, we also conducted research on a assigned Java Persistence API (JPA). In our case, this was TopLink JPA, where we demonstrated the difference between custom Data Access Objects and JPA.
